Dr. Maria Montessori was an activist. She advocated for peace and women and children’s rights. As one of the first female physicians in Italy, she was a remarkable example of a powerful woman.
Although her work in the field of education is awe-inspiring, her efforts towards social justice that began long before she embarked on her journey of developing a pedagogy is equally as empowering.
Dr. Montessori believed in equality for the sexes. She attended the International Women's Congress on many occasions, supporting women's rights for education. At one such event, she gave a speech about the inequality in pay for female factory and farm workers in Italy. Her urges for equal pay for equal work for women were heard as Congressional delegates adopted her resolution.
The way Maria Montessori spoke of the responsibilities of childcare also revealed her passionate ideals of women's rights. She once said, "The women of the future will have equal rights as well as equal duties... Family life as we know it may change, but it is absurd to think that feminism will destroy maternal feelings. The new woman will marry and have children out of choice, not because matrimony and maternity are imposed on her."
As you continue the meaningful work of Dr. Montessori, remember these powerful sentiments. Know that you have equal rights and equal duties. Realize that we stand on the shoulders of giants, for Dr. Montessori and other amazing women who came before us paved the path that we now travel, allowing each of us to celebrate our own successes and triumphs as women.
